Description
J.Vilumainis painted landscapes, figurative compositions, still-lifes, flowers and portraits. The special recognition was received with his still-lifes which involve with clearness of composition and riches of brown tones. Painted suburbs of Riga, especially Tornakalns, landscapes of Daugava and Perse. Worked in the Roja, Kaltene, Apsuciems much. He painted sea in its different moods, boxes of fishing networks. He created many compositions, dedicated to work and life of fishermen.
J.Vilumainis was born on April 25, 1909, in Riga. He studied in the Riga City Craft School (1925 - 1926). In 1935 graduated the Workshop of landscape painting in the Latvian Academy of Art with degree work "Tornakalns". Participated in exhibitions organized by society "Zala zeme" (from 1933), Society of Artists “Muksala” (from 1935), Cultural Foundation, and also on a regular basis participated in the Soviet art exhibitions.
J.Vilumainis was a member of the Artists’ Union since 1946. Personal exhibitions are organized in Riga (1942, 1973, 1984), Jurmala (1977). The artist was one of executors of scenery of L.Liberts and P.Rozlapa in the Latvian National opera (1935 - 1937). He worked as the art teacher in Rezekne’s State Institute of Teachers (1937 - 1938), in State Commercial School (1937-1938), in the Riga 29 elementary school (1938-1939), in 47 and 49 elementary schools (1939-1944.) J.Vilumainis was the director at School of Applied Art in Kuldiga (1945), the teacher in the Riga Middle School of Applied Art (1945 - 1946, 1949 - 1953), director in high school of the State Academy of Art (1946-1947) and at the Riga Art School named after J.Rosental (1947 - 1949). J.Vilumainis worked at combine “Maksla” (1953 - 1969). J.Viljumajnis was the laureate Cultural Foundation (1944). In 1979 awarded the title of the Latvian SSR Honored Art Worker.
J.Viljumajnis works are in private collections and museums in Russia, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, the USA, Germany, Czech, Poland, France, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, and etc. the countries.
