Description

An international printed matter mailing (newspaper wrapper) sent on November 12, 1939, from Riga to Munich, Germany. The sender is the Riga-based German newspaper "Rigasche Post," addressed to the "Haus der Presse" (House of the Press) in Munich. It is franked with 8 santīmi (the printed matter rate) using stamps from the 1938 20th Anniversary of Independence issue (3s and 5s). The absolute highlight of this cover is the presence of early WWII German military censorship markings. The front bears two exceptionally clear purple cachets: a large circular cachet of the Foreign Letter Censorship Office in Königsberg ("Auslandsbriefprüfstelle Königsberg (Pr)") featuring the imperial eagle and swastika, and a straight-line cachet "Von der Wehrmacht zugelassen" (Permitted by the Wehrmacht).
