Description

An official pre-revolutionary service letter (free-frank official mail) of the Russian Empire, sent in September 1896 from Riga to Arensburg (present-day Kuressaare, Saaremaa island, Estonia). The sender is the Riga Spiritual Consistory, indicated by a crisp blue official cachet with an outgoing document number. The letter is addressed to the Council of the local Orthodox Brotherhood. As official state/church correspondence, it was sent free of charge without postage stamps. The reverse features a large, well-preserved original red wax seal of the Consistory, along with a Riga transit datestamp (Sept 9) and an Arensburg arrival datestamp (Sept 11, 1896).
