Description
An outstanding international Express cover sent on November 30, 1939, from Riga to Vienna. The sender was the legendary, luxurious "Hôtel de Rome" in Riga, which was completely destroyed during WWII (embossed logo on the back flap). Perfectly franked at 1.05 Lats (35s base + 70s express fee) with a red crayon cross and "Exprès" label. The letter was subjected to strict Third Reich military censorship in Königsberg: the front bears the eagle cachet and "Von der Wehrmacht zugelassen", while the reverse features the rare "Im Staatsinteresse geöffnet" (Opened in the interest of the State) cachet, proving the letter was physically opened and read by the censor.
