Description

Ludvigs Bērziņš (1929–2021) was a distinguished Latvian artist who made significant contributions to stained glass art, scenography, graphics, and illustration.

He graduated from the Jānis Rozentāls Riga Art High School in 1951 and completed his studies at the Latvian State Academy of Art in 1958, specializing in theatrical decoration painting. Initially, Bērziņš worked in scenography, creating set designs for Latvian theaters, including productions at the Dailes Theatre and Youth Theatre.

From the 1960s, Bērziņš focused on stained glass art, producing over 90 works for public building interiors in Latvia, Russia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. His most notable projects include stained glass for the sanatoriums "Jaunķemeri" (1967) and "Belarus" (1981), the Riga Anglican Church of St. Savior (1979), the Latvian Parliament (1993), and the Talsi Evangelical Lutheran Church (1985). In 2001, Bērziņš participated in restoring the historic stained glass piece "Portrait of Richard Wagner."

Bērziņš was also known for his illustrations, graphics, and caricatures, collaborating with the popular magazine “Dadzis.” He became a member of the Latvian Artists' Union in 1962 and led its stained glass section from 1970 to 1991.

The works of Ludvigs Bērziņš are housed in the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Artists’ Union Museum, and other collections. His contribution to Latvian art, particularly in stained glass, stands as a remarkable example of artistic mastery and innovative approach.
