Description
Carl Magnus Hutschenreuther (1794-1845) was born in Thuringia and
started his working life as a porcelain painter. In 1814 Hutschenreuther
discovered kaolin, used for the production of porcelain, in north east
Bavaria and he decided to set up his eponymous state of the art
porcelain factory.
A second factory was established by Carl
Magnus' son Lorenz Hutschenreuther in the nearby town of Selb in 1857
and in 1969 both companies merged to form Hutschenreuther AG, Selb. The
lion motif, used by Lorenz Hutschenreuther in Selb and designed by Paul
Klee in 1919, was unified with the founding date of the original factory
to create the company trademark, signifying excellence in quality,
craftmanship and creativity.
