Description

Louis François Guillaume Wolfers (1820-1892), who had completed his master's thesis in Augsburg in 1838, founded his own business in Brussels in 1850. Earlier, around 1842, he joined the company of his older brother Guillaume and his sister-in-law Anche Wolf at Hofberg no. 42. In 1852 he registered his maker's mark and in 1858 he married Henriette Ruthenberg. The studio was moved to 23 rue des Long Chariots. From 1877, his sons, Philippe (1858-1929), Max (1859-1953) and Robert (1867-1959), were sent to prospect in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Austria. In 1885, Philippe married Sophie Wildstädter and the firm was renamed Louis Wolfers père et fils. Five years later - Max also became involved in the management of the company - a new shop and workshops for the manufacture of jewelery were set up at 1 rue du Loxum. Under Robert's impetus, hydraulic presses were installed in 1897. It was not until 1897, five years after Louis' death, that the company's name was changed to Wolfers Frères. The company or master mark was adapted to the three five-pointed stars in 1892 or at the latest in 1893.

The Wolfers family was a Bruxelles gold -and silversmith dynasty that operated under the name Wolfers Frères (Brothers Wolfers) at a certain point.

The firm Wolfers Frères designed and made the monumental table ensemble for the Belvédère-palace during the World Exposition in 1958. The Belvédère was used as a VIP-area and thus required prestigious decorations.
