Description
Kārlis Melbārzdis was an outstanding artist and one of the most notable followers of the landscape painting school of Vilhelms Purvītis. He remained closely aligned with his teacher's artistic principles, particularly in his depiction of nature. Melbārzdis' paintings are known for their refined sense of color, flawless composition, and excellent representation of specific locations. Even before the war, he attracted attention with his landscapes, notable for their panoramic breadth. The Gauja River and Sigulda occupy a special place in his body of work.
Kārlis Melbārzdis was born on August 2, 1902, in Jelgava. He graduated from the landscape workshop led by V. Purvītis at the Latvian Academy of Arts in 1931, with his diploma work titled "Winter." He became a member of the Union of Artists of the Latvian SSR in 1944 and was actively involved in its board and various committees for many years.
He began participating in exhibitions in 1933, and his first solo exhibition was held in Cēsis in 1934. Memorial exhibitions of his work were organized in Riga in 1972 and Moscow in 1974.
In 1963, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Latvia.
