Valdis Kalnroze painted landscapes, marinas, still lifes, cityscapes, especially with water and the reflection of the city in it. He was a particularly fine master of tonal painting. He created textured, pastose, silvery gray compositions in oil technique, complemented by bright colorful accents.
He studied at the studio of Ansis Stunda. In 1927 he entered the Latvian Academy of Arts, in 1932 he graduated from the Studio for Landscape Painting under the supervision of V.Purvītis with the graduation work "Labor" ("The Old Jelgava Sugar Factory"). During the studios travels around Europe - Germany, Holland, Belgium.
Participated in the art society "Zaļā Vārna" (Green Crow), exhibited his paintings in all of its exhibitions. Member of the Union of Artists of the Latvian SSR since 1944, expelled in 1952, but re-accepted in 1957.
He has participated in exhibitions since 1928. Solo exhibitions in Riga (1933 and 1934, together with K. Padegs, 1942, 1964, 1970, 1975, 1979). Commemorative exhibition in Ogre (1994).
In 1970 the artist was awarded the honorary title of the People's Artist of the Latvian SSR, and in 1980 the State Prize of the Latvian SSR.
