Description

Pēteris Upītis (1899—1989) was a Latvian graphic artist and collector. He drew landscape sketches, ex-libris, and woodcuts. He collected drawings and prints by Latvian artists on the history of Latvian book printing, about Rihards Zariņš and other Latvian artists.

Born on September 27, 1899, in Ķēči, Nītaure Parish. He studied at the Latvian Academy of Arts until 1932 and worked as a teacher at the Riga Forest School. After World War II, he was a lecturer (from 1945) and a professor (from 1962) at the Latvian State Academy of Arts. He was one of the first Latvian graphic artists to start creating thematic cycles. He died on June 5, 1989.

As a graphic artist, he created over 700 bookplates, precisely and symbolically revealing the personality of each owner. He illustrated books such as Antons Austriņš "Puiškāns," Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš "Tā paiet pasaule" and "Ar makšķeri," Aleksandr Pushkin's "Vara jātnieks," and Rūdolfs Blaumanis "Nāves ēnā."
