Description
A 1939 international illustrated cover sent from Riga to Florence, Italy. This item is of great postal history interest due to a rare auxiliary marking: a purple French cachet reading "Retiré de la boîte aux lettres... en état avarié" (Retrieved from the letterbox... in damaged condition). The post office applied this stamp to disclaim responsibility for the item's condition prior to processing. The cover was sent at the reduced "Printed Matter" rate (manuscript note "Drukats / Stampato"), correctly franked with 8 santīmi, as the reverse features no handwritten correspondence. Visually, it displays beautiful views of Riga, including the Freedom Monument on the front and a four-part photographic collage on the back.
