Description
An international commercial cover sent from Riga to Berlin on October 5, 1939—just a month after the outbreak of World War II. Sender: "Richard Beuter" company. The envelope is franked with three stamps totaling 35 santīmi (including a stamp from the 20th Anniversary of Independence issue). The main philatelic feature of this item is the large purple "T" (Taxe / Postage Due) cachet in a circle. This indicates that despite the 35 santīmi franking (standard rate), the letter was overweight, and the German post office was expected to collect a postage due fine from the recipient.
