Description
A local registered letter sent within Riga on July 16, 1919, complete with its original postal receipt. This is a highly significant transitional artifact: the letter was mailed just eight days after the Latvian Provisional Government returned to the liberated capital during the War of Independence. The cover is franked with three early stamps of the independent Republic of Latvia (5, 15, and 35 kopecks) cancelled by the new "RIGA / LATWIJA" postmarks. The absolute highlight is the attached original registration receipt. It is printed on an obsolete Imperial Russian blank (with text in Russian), illustrating the material shortages and transitional nature of the newly formed Latvian postal service.
