Description

A unique declared-value (money) letter sent in May 1912 from the Russian Empire to Germany (Grünau near Berlin). Addressed to the company "MOTIV G.m.b.H." on a pre-printed commercial mail-order form. The incredible historical significance of this lot lies in the sender's address: Isai Malykhin sent 5 Rubles from the "Prison of the city of Lgov, Kursk province" (тюрьма города Льгова). An international financial transaction originating from a pre-revolutionary Russian prison is an exceptionally rare postal occurrence. The reverse side, as required for shipping valuables, is heavily secured with five large red wax seals, franked with 13 kopecks in stamps, and bears a clear German arrival datestamp.
