Description
A registered commercial cover from the World War I era, sent during the German occupation of Riga (Ober Ost period). The sender is a local Riga medical specialist, Dr. J. Wisenberg. The letter is addressed to the famous German chemical and pharmaceutical company "Farbwerke vorm. Meister Lucius u. Brüning" (predecessor of Hoechst AG) in Höchst am Main. The envelope is franked with two German Empire "Germania" stamps (15 and 20 Pfennig) featuring the historically significant "Postgebiet Ob. Ost" overprint (Postal Area of the Supreme Commander of the East). Notable postal markings include a red Riga registration label, a red boxed military censor cachet "M.P.k." (Militärische Postkontrolle), and an oval "Kasse B" accounting mark applied upon arrival. The sender's printed address is crossed out and updated by hand.
