Description
International insured registered letter sent from the Riga Central Post Office to Baden-Baden, Germany. The declared value is 10 rubles, a significant sum for the period. The recipient is Johann Balthasar Trumpfheller (1876–1961), a prominent German sculptor and master of ivory miniature carving. In 1909, the year this letter was sent, he was working at the renowned Carl Haebler workshop in Baden-Baden. His Art Nouveau and Neo-Rococo works are now held in major European museums and are highly sought after at antique auctions. The high insured value of 10 rubles likely represents a payment for a sculpture or a private commission. The front features four Imperial Russian stamps (24 kopecks total), a "Riga Central" registration label, and a blue insurance cross. The reverse displays seven intact red wax seals from the sender and a crisp Baden-Baden arrival postmark dated September 28, 1909.
