Description
Natalia Antonija Mentele (née Briede; 1923–1987) was a Latvian ceramist, one of the leading masters of the second half of the 20th century. She studied at the Riga School of Applied Arts and graduated with honors from the Ceramics Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts in 1955. In the 1950s, while married to the painter Jūlijs Viļumainis, she signed her works as Viļumaine; later she became known under the surname Mentele. Her ceramics are distinguished by a harmonious blend of traditional forms and painterly decoration, mastery of the potter’s wheel, and a rich glazing palette. She exhibited widely in Latvia, the Soviet Union, and abroad, and also contributed to monumental ceramics, including the ceramic reliefs for the “Chilanzar” metro station in Tashkent. Her works are preserved in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Latvia and in private collections.
