Description

The Konakovo faience is a unique phenomenon of the artistic culture. Founded in 1809 the Konakovo  factory belonged for six decades to the pioneer of the Russian faience industry Andrey Auerbach. Wonderful and inimitable skill of painters, technical perfection of the articles instantly won the well-deserved recognition. At the First Public Exhibitions of Russian manufactories held in 1829 and 1833 in Peterburgh and Moscow the Konakovo factory was awarded the highest prizes and the right to use the State Emblem on its articles and signs.

In 1870 famous Matvey Kuznetsov, the king of Russian porcelain, becomes the owner of the factory. His firm founded in 1889 under the name of "Kuznetsov's Company for Producing Porcelain and Faience Articles" becomes one of the biggest in Russia producer of porcelain and faience tableware as well as decorative and everyday majolica.

Thanks to the creative efforts of wellknown Russian masters of fine arts and its artistic qualities the Konakovo faience was repeatedly awarded the highest prizes at international exhibitions. The factory won the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition of 1937, the Silver Medal at the Brussels Exhibition of 1958, medals at the 1962 and 1979 International Ceramics Exhibitions, the Gold Medal at the Plovdiv Exhibition of 1984.

The Konakovo faience factory remains now one of the biggest producers of faience and decorative majolica in Russia. Its main produce are two varienties of fine ceramic articles - faience and majolica - which differ in technology of decorating and glazing. The advantages of faience are undoubted. It is considerably cheaper and the wide use of subglaze decors gives to articles high firmness, warmth and cleanness which are very important for the ware of everyday use.
