Henri Alphonse Nelson was Parisian and attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts, studying under Millet. He exhibited at the Salon from 1882 onwards, receiving an honourable mention at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. He was working at a time when the Art Nouveau style was blossoming and the fluidity and suggested eroticism, typical of the Art Nouveau style is very apparent in this work.He also modelled for Goldscheider.

Alphonse Henri Nelson was born in Paris in 1854, attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts - studying under Aime Millet. He exhibited at the Salon from 1882 onwards and received an honorable mention at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. Nelson's work was at the height of the Art Nouveau period and the fluidity of style of the time is evident in his sculpture, as well as an unveiling of suggestive eroticism. That is very evident in this work when you compare the look exhibited by the face and pose compared to the classical or innocent faces of the typical late 19th century bronze subjects. He experimented with different patinations and the tinted dore' of this subject is a good example.

Unlike Villanis, who was most prolific in number of sculptures (almost all with the same 'signature' facial features, and casting in every medium from chalk to bronze for maximum exposure and sale, Nelson was a more reserved sculptor, in terms of output and was very careful in who produced his works. At the time, the Goldscheider foundry was one of the best in Paris and was extremely selective on who and what they produced. This is an outstanding example of those high standards.
