Description
A WWII German occupation (Reichskommissariat Ostland) postcard mailed on May 22, 1942. The geography of this item is particularly interesting: it originates from the Estonian island of Ösel (Saaremaa). It bears a clear "ARENSBURG (OSEL) / DEUTSCHE DIENSTPOST OSTLAND" cancellation (Arensburg being the German name for Kuressaare). It is a local drop letter (addressed "Siin" - Here in Estonian), correctly franked with a 3 Pfennig Hitler stamp bearing the "OSTLAND" overprint. The front features a charming silhouette illustration and an Estonian spring holiday greeting "Rõõmsaid Pühi".
