Description
An international letter sent from the Latvian town of Rūjiena to Königsberg, Germany, on January 15, 1940, during the first year of World War II. The envelope bears a perfect 35 santīmi franking (utilizing stamps from commemorative and semi-postal issues). The prime historical value of this item lies in the physical evidence of Third Reich military censorship. The letter was sliced open for inspection and subsequently resealed using a specialized censor tape. The tape is printed with the word "Geprüft" (Examined) and features the circular cachets of the High Command of the Wehrmacht (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht), complete with the imperial eagle and swastika.
