Description

The 1909 issue stamps with denominations of 1k–14k were revalued as rubles, while the ruble-denominated stamps were once again used at their face value. In December 1922 / January 1923, a portion of the remaining 1909–17 stock with kopeck denominations received surcharges featuring a star, hammer, and sickle along with a new denomination (e.g., 40r on 15k, 100r on 15k, 200r on 15k). Note: Later, in January 1923, these stamps were adjusted to represent 40k, 1r, and 2r respectively. December 21, 1922. Letter from Moscow to Denmark, franked with: 3 stamps of 7 rubles = 21 rubles, 3 stamps of 3 kopecks = 9 rubles, 3 stamps of 40 rubles = 120 rubles (provisories — surcharges on 15-kopeck stamps of the 1909 issue). Total = 150 rubles, which was the correct tariff for a standard letter shortly after the introduction of the 40r, 100r, and 200r provisories (corresponding to 40k, 1r, and 2r).
