Description
April 5, 1916. A registered censored letter sent from Petrograd to England, received (backstamp present) ??.??.1916. A green two-line stamp indicates that the letter was intercepted by the Germans and delayed as a result. During World War I, German U-boats and cruisers intercepted merchant and postal vessels. If the ship was not sunk, the mail could be confiscated for inspection. Eventually (sometimes via neutral countries), these letters were delivered to the addressees, bearing such explanatory markings.
