Description

January 22, 1915. A registered letter from Kharkiv to Geneva. The reverse features censorship stamps; received on February 29, 1916 (according to Gregorian/Julian calendars). Addressee: At this time, the Red Cross in Geneva was dedicated to tracing prisoners of war and facilitating correspondence between families separated by the war. The correspondence bureau processed thousands of inquiries. The large "Rouge Croix" inscription in red pencil was made by postal workers to ensure the letter reached the correct distribution center more quickly.
