Description

An outstanding 1914 international postal card featuring an exotic route: from Riga to Egypt (Birket El Sab). Mailed on April 7, 1914, shortly before the outbreak of WWI. The recipient's address is carefully written in both Russian and German. The front bears a Riga machine roller cancel and a magnificent bilingual (English-Arabic) "ALEXANDRIA" transit datestamp from April 27, 1914. The handwritten German text on the reverse adds immense postal history value: the sender complains about customs issues (Zollamt) caused by a previous letter sealed with five wax seals, and discusses the highly sought-after Romanov "Jubilee stamps."
