Description
April 23, 1911. A registered letter sent from Kharkiv to Germany, received on May 9, 1911 (Gregorian calendar). Note: Dr. Lahmann's Sanatorium (Weisser Hirsch) was one of the most prestigious resorts in Europe at the time, frequented by aristocrats, wealthy industrialists, and cultural figures (such as Thomas Mann and Vladimir Nabokov). The fact that the letters were sent from a railway station post office indicates the sender's intent to expedite delivery; such mail departed with the very first available postal train.
