Description
The inscription is in German (Kurrent script): To: Herrn Joh. Raisch, Fuhris (To Mr. Joh. Raisch, likely an abbreviation for Fuhrmann — carrier/carter). Destination: in Egenhausen. District: O.A. Nagold (O.A. stands for Oberamt — the administrative district of Nagold). The Recipient: The Raisch family is an ancient lineage in Egenhausen. Given the "carter" notation, the letter likely concerned logistics or the delivery of goods. Geography: The letter traveled across the entire Kingdom of Württemberg — from Geislingen (east of Stuttgart) to Egenhausen (to the west, near the Black Forest). Postal History (Currency Transition): We see a "change of eras" on a single envelope: Top: 3 KREUZER — the old currency of Württemberg. Bottom Right: 10 PFENNIG — the new currency of the German Empire. Why are there two? In 1875, Germany transitioned from kreuzers to marks and pfennigs. Old stocks of envelopes with pre-printed kreuzer stamps were allowed to be used, but they had to be "supplemented" with new stamps according to the exchange rate.
