Description

Nikolai Sergeevich Chukov, born on 18 September 1923, is a Russian painter and a representative of the Russian realist school.

He was born in the village of Teplovo in Tula Governorate, into a peasant family. His interest in painting began after a visit to the Tretyakov Gallery, where he saw works by Isaac Levitan.

In 1950, he graduated from the Moscow Higher School of Art and Industry, formerly the Stroganov School. He later moved to Leningrad. The main themes of his work became the landscapes of the Novgorod village of Gorushka, Lake Zabolotye and the Shegrinka River, as well as portraits.

In 1969–1974, Chukov created a series of portraits of steelworkers at the Kirov Plant. In 1976–1980, he painted a gallery of portraits of veterans of the “Road of Life” and the Second World War; some of these works are held in museum collections.

In 1991, the artist worked in France, where he created children’s portraits. His works were exhibited in France and Germany and are also held in museums and private collections in Paris, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and New York.

In 1998, Chukov was elected a member of the Petrovskaya Academy of Sciences and Arts.

In 2023, marking his 100th birthday, he celebrated the anniversary with a solo exhibition at the St. Petersburg Union of Artists.
