Description

Nikolajs Kulainis (17 March 1901, Riga – 15 March 1975, Riga) was a Latvian landscape painter.

From 1924 to 1931, he studied at the Art Academy of Latvia in the studio of Professor Jānis Tillbergs. He began participating in exhibitions in 1929. Kulainis was one of the founders and leaders of the artists’ association “Radigars” and was also a member of the Latvian Artists’ Society and the artists’ association “Rosme”. In 1944, he became a member of the Artists’ Union.

Kulainis painted mainly urban and rural landscapes. He became particularly well known for his atmospheric views of Riga in evening and nighttime illumination.
