Description
Artist worked in: easel-painting, scene painting, applied arts, press, book and poster design.
In easel-painting P. Kundzins focused mainly on landscape genre, as well as painted and drew psychologically and spiritually saturated portraits. His created landscapes include deep understanding about sense of the world. It brought in Latvian art scene peculiar features. Artist is commonly referred to as "cloud Kundzins" because almost in all of his paintings clouds have physically and emotionally important role, occupying most of the work. Nature and character of clouds revealed in shades of various days and seasons. Thus, in works appears monumentality impression, which is complemented by warm and cool tones and its increased relationships. "From the youth P.Kundzins in his landscape paintings took romantic perception of nature, partial color coat decorativeness, adding new qualities – deep nature experience, strong compositional structure of painting, refined tonality in atmospheric phenomenon portrayal. [..] It is inexhaustible and infinitely varied world of shapes and colors, reflecting the artist's philosophical reflection about nature and its grandeur and strength," commented art historian S.Cielava.
Professional art education P.Kundzins got in Stieglitz Central Technical drawing school in St.Petersburg. He graduated Theater scenery painting class. P.Kundzins is one of the main formers of Latvian scene painting foundations. He participated in exhibitions from 1913., taking part also in Latvian art group "White Crow" exhibitions. While living in Russian and Latvian cities P. Kundzins worked as an art teacher at various schools. Later artist worked as a scene painter in "New Rigas Theater" and as decoration workshop manager in "National Opera". Later when he came back from exile in Germany in 1945., P.Kundzins worked as a methodologist in "Teacher training institute" and as designe artist in combine "Art".
