Description

Emma Baltmane painted landscapes of small cities, rural landscapes and still-lifes. In 1930-ies she gained popularity with marketmotifs of such cities as Krustpils, Jekabpils and Kraslava.

Emma Baltmane was born on March 16, 1882 in Krustpils. She studied at Mary’s School of Jekabpils where she made excellent successes in drawing. The school granted her a support for studying at the Saint Petersburg art academy, but parents didn’t allow her to study there. Instead she studied painting in Sergey Vinogradov’s studio in Riga (1925-1927).

Since 1929 Emma Baltmane participated in exhibitions of the Group of Independed Artists. She was a member of the Latvian SSR Artists’ Union since 1945.

Her memorial exhibitions were organized in Jekabpils (1970, 1982). Emma Baltmane died on December 16, 1969 in Krustpils.
